Research shows that many Americans seek mental health treatment. Here's some data:
Nearly one in four (23%) American adults and one in five (21%) American adolescents sought treatment during the past year (Mojtabai & Olfson, 2020, Olfson et al., 2018).
Nearly 70% of adults coping with serious psychological distress sought treatment, and 21% of adults without serious distress did, too (Olfson et al., 2018).
Medication is the most common form of treatment (Olfson et al., 2018), though nearly 10% of American adults participated in psychotherapy in the past year (Terlizzi & Zablotsky, 2020)
What knowing about how many people go to therapy means for you
If you are considering mental health treatment then these data suggest that you are not alone. Many Americans - likely including your colleagues, classmates, neighbors, and family members - seek treatment each year.
